Air conditioning is almost synonymous with luxury at this point. It is one of the most universal conveniences of the modern era; on a hot, humid summer day, air conditioning can feel like a life saver. And to find yourself suddenly without it just as a heat wave strikes is absolutely awful. That’s why you should always keep an eye out for signs that your air conditioner might need repair. Here are a few red flags to look out for.
No Cool Air
Sometimes, the air conditioner seems to be working, but when you put your hand up to it, the air coming out is basically the outside temperature. Even if it is still a little bit cooler, if your air conditioning isn’t blasting out the same cold air that it used to, there’s probably an internal issue with it, like a failed compressor or low Freon levels. At this point, the unit definitely needs repair, possibly replacement.
No or Low Air Flow
If the air is cold, but it doesn’t seem to be pumping out at the same intensity, or if it works in some rooms and not others, then there’s probably something clogging up the works internally. This will require repair and cleaning in order to fully restore the unit to capacity. It’s not only important to do for the sake of the unit’s efficiency, the debris clogging up the system could actually present a health and safety hazard.
Thermostat Issues
It can sometimes be difficult to tell if the problem you’re having is with the air conditioning, or just the thermostat. You can’t really know if an issue is coming from the source, or if it’s just because the air conditioner isn’t getting the proper signals. One sign that it is a thermostat issue is if rooms have wildly different temperatures. Regardless, at this point it’s usually best to have a professional come in and diagnose the issue.
Noises
Whenever any piece of machinery is making noises that it doesn’t usually, that generally indicates that there’s some level of wear and tear or broken components inside. If an air conditioner is making a bunch of strange sounds beyond what you would expect, then that’s a good time to call in a professional.
